As part of the Loudoun County Public Schools district, which is ranked 24th out of 130 school districts in Virginia, Tuscarora High stands out for its diverse student population and higher percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch.

While Tuscarora High's overall academic performance, as measured by SOL (Standards of Learning) test scores, is generally lower than the Loudoun County Public Schools district and the state of Virginia averages, the school does have some strengths in specific subject areas, such as higher proficiency rates in English Reading for 11th grade and Algebra I for 9th grade compared to the district and state. The school's lower student-teacher ratio of 11.6 and higher per-student spending of $16,905 may contribute to these academic strengths, despite the overall challenges faced by the school's diverse and economically disadvantaged student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote We relocated to Virginia from the Midwest. We came from a high school of 3600 students to Tuscarora (1700). We absolutely love this school. The teachers and staff love their work here and the kids benefit so much from that!! We see the principal, asst. principal, teachers, etc at athletic events all the time! The teachers make it a priority that their students master the material. It's not just about the score. We have an opportunity to move again and our daughter does not want to leave this school. She loves it! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
