Emerson High School

Summary:

Emerson High School is a public high school in McKinney, Texas, serving grades 9-12 and part of the McKinney Independent School District. With a student population of 1,321, Emerson has a diverse racial makeup, with 30.36% White, 17.03% African American, 14.69% Hispanic, and 31.49% Asian students.

While Emerson High School has a relatively low dropout rate of 0.3%, its academic performance on the STAAR End-of-Course exams lags behind nearby Frisco Independent School District high schools like Centennial High School, Liberty High School, and Independence High School. Emerson's proficiency rates range from 39.16% in Algebra I to 84% in U.S. History, which are below the district and state averages. Additionally, Emerson has a higher percentage of economically disadvantaged students (18.47%) compared to nearby Frisco ISD schools.

Despite these challenges, Emerson High School's diverse student population and lower student-teacher ratio of 12.5 could be seen as strengths that could be leveraged to improve student outcomes. Continued focus on academic interventions, teacher support, and resource allocation may be necessary to help Emerson High School improve its performance and ranking within the state, which has declined from 270th out of 1,876 Texas high schools in 2021-2022 to 318th out of 1,987 in 2023-2024.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Horrible school. Pretty much indicative of what I have experienced with Frisco ISD. However, far worse at this High School. Fights amongst students and teachers. No one to be held accountable. I went and bought a new home in a different isd. I know MANY who did the same. What a garbage ISD and school. Your numbers, news reports, and parent forums reflect how horrible of school you are. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
